Team work throughout the global packaging value web is a must as food safety concerns meet emerging supply network realities. That's what Mike Richmond of PTIS and Sam Messina of HAVI Global Solutions say in April's Packaging World magazine.The FDA is already stretching its reach globally under the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act. Here are a few steps packagers and suppliers can take to stay ahead of the game:

• Be sure you have ISO-compliant, HACCP or other programs in place
• Stretch testing processes along the value web, extending into raw materials
• Develop monitoring systems with your value web partners to monitor production processes and spot variations
