Use up-front thinking to develop sustainable packages

That's what PTIS' Mike Richmond says in the April 2012 issue of Dairy Foods magazine. He says look for these emerging issues as you begin the process.

  • Zero waste
  • Use of bio-based and post-consumer materials
  • Laws and regulations, particularly from the standpoint of toxic compounds in the package
  • What is the public's perception. For example, not everyone sees a benefit in the use of biodegradable additives to breakdown packages.
  • What do retailers want? Walmart has its scorecard; others ban certain materials
