Holistic approach yields innovation, savings
The drive to cut costs and complement each other when package developers take the Holistic Package Optimization (HPO) route. It looks at the package throughout its lifecycle from raw materials to disposal to see where synergies exist. Here are some key places to look:
- When the consumer uses the package. The details in how the package is used can point to new designs that also save materials.
- Modeling and simulation software. Finite element analysis isn’t common in packaging but it can break this habit: Overdesign first, then cost-reduce later.
- Understand distribution channels. If you save, but the retailer incurs added cost to handle a package, it is a no-win situation. Know what goes on at each stage of the process.
