Use future scenarios to prepare for business 'what ifs'
Every packaging manager has some responsibility for having a plan to address the risks that could emerge from change. Those risks could include changes in consumer trends, They could be changes in material availability. The could be pressure by interest groups such as those one food manufacturer faced on BPA in its cans. Running a futures scenario program can help you be prepared. Here are key points in setting up a program:
- It differs from forecasting; it is linear and builds on where things are now. Future scenarios look at alternate developments.
- Find a focus. If you're looking at materials availability, what materials are "mission critical" to your organization?
- Ask, "What are the uncertainties.”
- Know that scenarios produce options, not "truth."
- Make sure management know about the options. It is another of the efforts that have to be “sold” upward to management.
